Nome is a gnome. Don't get attached to your food. No naming the cows, they just end up as hamburger and steaks. Leave the pigs outside, even if you name them Bacon.

It hurts Late, it hurts.

Following our kill of heroic Vexiona, the Old Guard fought their way across a long bridge to watch a long video that doesn't seem to auto skip now for some reason...  The Carapace of N'Zoth!  Yes, the long awaited battle where we fight our way through a large cavity with questionable geometry in some tentacle monster while not trying to lose our sanity.

Don't get me wrong.  The fight is good.  The shadows of the tentacles showing where they are going to land is great (Shame you cant jump on top of the tentacles).  There is variation between the phases that leads to a great final where things get hectic.  Let me not fail to mention that a protection paladin is useful for once with at least one trick to get through a phase more easily.

Time for the final boss where personal accountability is paramount.  Hmmmmm....

With only one end-of-wing boss left to tackle, the Old Guard walked past the soccer arena to tackle buffed up twilight dragon Vexiona.  It is not our first rodeo with a twilight dragon.  They have a habit of going nuts and running amok (particularly if their name starts with V).  Same basic dragon rules apply: Don't stand in front with the breath.  Don't stand by tail unless you are into whip play.  Expect it to take off at a certain point and just poop down destruction on you that you need to avoid.  50% of the time, there is some type of fear involved.  Oh, and high probability for random debuffs you need to run out.  Vex here has the added challenge of cultists portaling in to assist with a large add that likes to kamehameha the raid at inconvenient times.

And no... tanks did not intentionally aim it at certain players in the raid...  Usually...

After the realization that a) Death Knight tanks are really strong (they are dead inside already) and b) Death Knights can take kamehameha blasts in the face easily because they are really strong (they are dead inside already), the fight went down pretty fast.

Finally, time for the end game for this raid.  This next boss will be rough!

Il'gynoth has come a long way since we beat on it's big 'ol eyeball way back in the Emerald Nightmare.  Back then (was it over 4 years ago??), it was merely the second boss in raid, filled with tentacles, ichor and eyestalks with just a single heart.

Now Il'gynoth has graduated to the big leagues.  Grew a large avatar, tossing slimy bloods around and now improved with 3 hearts!  Promoted to an end-of-wing boss as well!  Out of all of those upgrades, what made it annoying for our team was dealing with the MC mechanics thrown out at us while keeping up with the adds.  The MC debuff can quickly spread out to anyone not paying attention to where the afflicted are running amok.

With some hard work and actually paying attention to MCs going off around our team, we finally got it down.

Next up is Vexiona.

The Old Guard decided to work on Il'gynoth first in Heroic Ny'alotha mostly because after killing Tentacles, we are already down the tunnel, we didn't want to clear up through the tunnel and the door is just right here.  We worked on him a bit, relearning old Alliance skills of running away from PVP MC characters but it just wasn't coming along that well.  For a change of pace, the next evening we decided it was time for some...  MORTAL KOMBAT!

Past Tetris and Kazoo was our old buddy Ra-den from the Throne of Thunder.  This wasn't the Chris Lambert version either.  Don't quite know why he was here..  I guess he was involved in a very long questline or such where everyone was aiming for a legendary and he kinda appeared and disappeared in the middle of it?  No one quite remembers.  It could be that N'Zoth felt like he needed more bosses to occupy his tentacle paradise to keep raiders busy for a longer period of time without having to think of too many new mechanics.  He was once our enemy, then our friend, then our enemy..?  Whatever the reason, he drops good trinkets that many classes can use...

The fight came along pretty quickly for us which everyone totally completely expected.  Flasks had run out by the time of our final pull but luckily a sassy resto shaman happened to have a cauldron of the cheapo Walmart brand flasks in her bags for some reason.  They worked great!

What next?  Back to Il'gynoth or take a crack at Vexiona?

News / My mana got *killed*

The Old Guard continued down the endless halls, tunnels and platforms of Heroic Ny'alotha, wishing Qiraji battle tanks were viable once more.  We opted to go straight for the tentacles and head down the spiral tunnel to take on Shaggy the Green Pooper first.  After getting an earful from their healers, the tanks learned that using DBM didn't really help much for taunt notifications in the fight and just made it more confusing.  With addons shut off and tanks actually paying attention to the poopers casts, the fight went down pretty easily.

After the fight, melee had enough of the insta-melee-gib trash pulls in the tunnels so we ran up and right past the soccer arena to take on Tetris and Kazoo.  The raid once again learned the importance of how to focus fire down boss adds and dodge roly polys.  If you kill marked targets and dodge things, you can usually win!

With the bugs down, our raid leader reluctantly decided it was time to play soccer against, the Soccer Boss!  There is no greater thrill in raiding then watching with clenched butts if 3 raid members can navigate through laggy internet connections and wonky collision detection to rocket league a floating ball into a goal while avoiding obstacles.  Truly sadistic torture for even the most patient souls.  Thankfully it went down pretty quickly.

(Little did we know that in later weeks the Soccer Boss received a buff called "complacency" that made a kill take 45 minutes.  Hmmmm.....)

We let Queen Azshara go, because, well its Warcraft and we always let our former enemy bosses go.  We're buddies now since we kicked her butt one tier ago, just like in all shounen manga.  Remember, this is an expansion of many shades of gray..  Hah!  Anyway, we figured we might as well go take on the last not-end of wing boss, Tentacles.  After beating on all the tentacles for approximately 36 minutes, it plopped over and dropped loots.  Well, loots magically appeared in our backpacks..  Usually in the form of an item called artifact power, something extremely valuable at this point of the expansion... Shade of gray!

All the not-end of wing bosses have been downed.  Time to work on the serious stuff....

News / Battle for Tentacles
« Last post by Nanako on March 07, 2020, 09:33:07 PM »
In late January of 2020, the Old Guard raid team was reminded (much to our surprise) that the Battle for Azeroth expansion had not quite ended yet and a new raid tier had opened up... Ny'alotha!  The land of shadows, purple debuffs and large tentacles that manages to grope and rub you the wrong way.  What awaits our fearless raid team that has a couple hours to burn 3 nights a week?

First we encounter Wrathion...  Waaaaaaait, whaaaaaaa..???!  Wasn't he on our side?!  No matter, let's kick him around and see what he drops...

Oh, it was a twisted illusion...  Yes, we knew that!  Don't worry, Wrath, we totally knew that wasn't you....

Onwards through dozens and dozens and dozens of trash packs, we stumbled upon what we thought was a boss, Prophet Skitra.  Or was it?

We shall never know...

After that dead end, we fought through dozens and dozens and dozens of trash packs to encounter the winged Maut.  It was a highly unusual boss since it didn't really outright kill many of our raid team members.  No, no, the ticksy boss managed to have our raid members kill themselves in multiple ways.  Hmmmm...

Next time, let's see where that elevator leads us to!
